Top 5 Bee Friendly Spring Flowering Bulbs to Plant this Autumn

We all love to see our gardens buzzing with bees and by filling our gardens with flowers, we can help to keep the bees happy and well fed. Not only does this benefit the bees, but in return they will leave behind a well pollinated garden that is healthy, productive, and full of beautiful blooms. It makes no difference if your garden is large or small, even those with a balcony can plant up pots or window boxes to support the bees.

To help make things even easier for you, we’ve put together a list of our top 5 favourite bee friendly bulbs that you can plant next Autumn.

Allium Ambassador

At the top of our list, we have Allium Ambassador which like all Alliums, is very popular among people and bees alike. Allium Ambassador produces large dense purple spheres that are perfect for pollinators and look fantastic when planted in large groups or borders. It also makes for an excellent cut flower, both in fresh and dried flower arrangements.

Species Crocus Blue Pearl

Crocus Blue Pearl is a very clever little flower. Delicate blue petals close overnight to enable the pollen to remain dry and contained. As a result of this, Queen bees will often use the Crocus as a BB&B (a Bee Bed & Breakfast!). Sleeping inside the flower provides ample protection and a rich source of pollen and nectar.

Hyacinthoide Non-Scripta (English Bluebells)

Bluebells are a sweet, scented flower that are a great choice to grow along a hedge or in a shady woodland area as they will spread naturally year after year. Not only are these dainty bells popular with bees, but you will often find them covered with hoverflies and butterflies too.

Eranthis Cilicica

Eranthis Cilicia presents a sunny blanket of small flowers that expands to cover more ground each year. This flower blooms just as the bees awaken from their hibernation which makes it a fantastic source of nectar and pollen.

Muscari azureum

Densely crowded with pale blue flowers, Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) is the perfect flower to grow amongst other flowers in your Spring planting arrangement. It also thrives in awkward growing conditions and can therefore make a great space filler.
